Iran’s loss against Argentina was disappointing, but expected.
Team Melli struggled for 90 minutes. Argentina was unable to create a finishing opportunity until the 91st minute when Lionel Messi managed to break away from the already tired Iranian defense, to score a goal that can only be described as magic.
The loss wasn’t surprising, it was expected. Everyone knew that Argentina was to win, which is why Iran’s playing strategy should have been different.
Team Melli’s world cup game plan has been conservatism. The whole team defends, and upon intercepting the ball, it is either cleared or passed up to an attack comprised of two-three players. This is why Iran has yet to secure a world cup goal.
With no expectation of winning, why not focus on scoring?
In the 86th minute Reza had a breakaway shot that the Argentinean goalkeeper was unable to contain. The ensuing rebound was loose for the next few seconds, a sure goal had there been another attacker.
There were two other formidable opportunities, but they lacked the talent and luck to produce a desperately needed goal, there was also a questionable tackle that many saw as a penalty in Iran's favor.
The team needs to shift its attention onto scoring. Albeit a great goalkeeper, Haghighi can only block so many shots.
Team Melli has played well so far, putting up a fight against powerful teams, but has yet to impress the spectators and viewers back home. Without a win against their next opponent Bosnia, Iran will not advance to the next round.
If Team Melli is not likely to win the cup (or even advance for that matter), why not try and score some goals to celebrate over?
